I actually did that so things wouldn't look quite as stiff and probably went overboard. Great point about the uneveness of the lines. I *think* it will end up much better without requiring a lot of time. I'll have to get the character animated and a few screens worth of level done adding everything as I see it in my head. I am definitely going to focus on the palette and touch things up a bit. Yeah I get the barbarian scene is very rough.

Also polish is what.80 or 90% of what makes a game good? even if there are some things that should be dealt with in the very beginning (mostly design decisions) most of it can be improved later in the polishing stage, for the start it's more important to get a prototype of any sorts down. In general though I agree that you have to just go with what you have to be most efficient/fast, the speed comes also with practice, so just starting, is best way to get faster and better at it.

There are actually many options to make this little piece of art more professional looking, I thought I point out some Oh and something else: the biggest problem I see with your picture above is the unevenness of lines that looks like an unsteady hand (or mouse) has drawn it and is mostly making it look childlike, so having a line stabilizer or using paths in photoshop or using adobe flashs smoothing of lines, can be a big help to make it look alot more professionalĪnd then again, some basic tips that can improve your scene alot by just some very simple changes: colors towards the background should get brighter and less saturated, add elements for foreground to give more depth, add clouds or similar for more depth behind the mountains, skies are generally a gradient from lighter on the bottom to darker at the top, outlines should never be black, but a very dark color instead, if at all, decide if you go for outlines on everything or none at all (consistency) if you want to make the player simply more visible towards background, use slightly darker outlines than the rest, but don't leave outlines away on the whole then!

Still images or action poses can help alot and they are single drawn images that are much less time intensive than the full blown animation, but they help alot for the tedious animating part later on

For special looking characters with abnormal proportions, one might need to make a new basis though.Īll in all, you have to put the work in atleast once into some sort of reference sheet or something similar (look at character sheets on deviantart as example) which is practically like game design, just on a different subject And it helps immensly, to not only stay consistent (important to make something look pleasant), but also to have something to look at and not having to answer same questions over and over again (how does character in this pose look? how does it look from behind? how does it run?etc.) Instead of trying to animate everything out of your imagination, you just lay bases everywhere. In that way, you aren't so far away with your thinking that making a common base is useful for artists, many use that and for some generic characters it can be just fine. All things you can achieve, by working hard on one basis which you use for all future images that you need. then closely followed by shapes, colorscheme etc. The most important part is consistency, in my opinion.
